Cowboys Proprietor Jerry Jones Fined $250,000 for ‘Inadvertent’ Offensive Signal toward Fans

The NFL has imposed a substantial $250,000 fine on Cowboys owner Jerry Jones for what he describes as an “unintentional” obscene gesture directed at attendees during a recent contest at MetLife Stadium.

Viral video clips appeared to show Jones making an obscene gesture at Jets fans, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Cowboys fans in attendance as his team clinched a decisive win.

“It was unfortunate. That was essentially an interaction with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a Tuesday interview. “There was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not New York fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with enthusiasm for the Dallas team.”

Jones additionally clarified that the gesture was entirely unintentional, happening amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he remarked. “The action was inadvertently done. I’m not kidding. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Penalties

This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for inappropriate behavior. Recent examples include:

  • Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at fans in January 2024.
  • Then Titans owner Bud Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, possesses an estimated wealth of around $16bn, so the penalty manageable for the wealthy owner.

Offseason Controversies and Media Attention

The incident follows a contentious offseason for Jones, who faced widespread backlash from the Cowboys fanbase after the team traded key defensive player Parsons to the Green Bay Packers.

Additionally, Jones was a prominent subject in a Netflix documentary that explored his role in developing the Cowboys into the globe’s highest-worth athletic organization, even with its recent title shortcomings.

The league’s decision to fine Jones underscores its continuing effort to uphold proper behavior among all franchise representatives, regardless of their status or financial standing.
