Patients Discontinuing Weight-Loss Injections Put On Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters
A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the mechanism of the drugs accounts for the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is unsuppressed, making excessive eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Experiences
People who have come off the jabs describe a sudden return of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," said a patient.
This difficulty is compounded if patients have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Adoption is greater among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
