Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride Will Go Ahead During FIFA Tournament Despite Objections from Iran and Egypt

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations in Seattle during the upcoming FIFA World Cup tournament are proceeding as scheduled, despite Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised objections regarding a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Venue Regulations and City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee stated clearly they are “moving forward as planned” with celebratory programming outside the stadium. This coincides with the Group G match between Iran and Egypt on 26 June. Furthermore, the tournament's governing body has a policy allowing rainbow flags inside the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s role is to get the city ready to host the matches and manage the fan activities beyond the match venue,” said the vice-president of communications.

Cultural Context Behind the Formal Complaints

Homosexuality is illegal under Iranian law, while in Egypt, morality laws are often used to target and prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it did not want to be linked to events that “directly contradict the cultural, religious and social values … in Arab and Islamic societies.” In a parallel move, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “its opposition against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance Regarding Symbols

Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. Although its rules forbid banners and flags with political messages, it allows flags expressing “sporting and social symbols,” a category which includes the Pride flag. This regulation was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reinforced after incidents of authorities confiscating flags.

  • This special fixture concept was devised to highlight Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for inclusion and equality.
  • An artistic competition is underway to create images celebrating the occasion.
  • Planners have pledged to making sure all fans feel welcome in the Pacific Northwest during the 48-team competition.

The region hosts one of the nation’s most prominent Iranian-American communities, a vibrant Egyptian diaspora, and diverse populations representing all nations. “Our commitment is to ensuring everyone encounter the warmth, respect and dignity that defines our part of the country,” organizers concluded.
