The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Selection in English Test Series Team
The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection suggests that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the initial match to determine whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.
Both pace bowlers are part of the selected squad, showing there are no concerns about their fast bowler's fitness.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner enters the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Pace Bowlers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted several past matches.
In those matches, 134 wickets have been taken by pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “a mainstay and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers is still the more likely decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the team to offer some spin while also bolstering the batting lineup.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English best spinner.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a significant test for people who haven’t done it in the past in these conditions,” he said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so opponents come out and excel out here.”
