The Evolution of a Movement is often marked by clear stages.

1. The Grand Vision

An inspiring figure or leaders propose a new and transcendent idea that promises a solution for disconnected individuals.

Thus we find ourselves. They’re getting ready to storm the compound in Australia. Pressure is mounting. Conflict emerges from the sidelines. An isolated player, vulnerable, anxious, the phrase ATTACKING MINDSET written on his body in chicken blood, has come staggering from the field and is taken aside in secrecy towards an inconclusive loan stint at Derbyshire.

Remember the early days, when everything was fresh? The initial phase, of uninhibited aggression.

2. The Honeymoon Phase

Movement founders guarantee a fresh beginning, a brighter tomorrow, love, salvation within a community who all believe in the philosophy.

What was this thing initially? A team united feeling good. Ink. Strength. Focus. Confident masculinity. Of course, The team insist Bazball doesn’t actually exist, ironically as it’s denied, what was that spectacle?

But we know what it is. It’s the batsman attempting a move so unconventional it defies description. It’s the excitement of the leader at his peak, a look that says: pensive Nordic god, strong features, natural look, so authentically Modern Savage you wouldn’t be surprised to glance over and see him playing at mid-off bare-chested holding a fish.

It’s Ben Duckett continuing to have permission to talk in press conferences, appearing as a happy little woodland creature smartly dressed, saying stuff like we are actively deconstructing the orange. Indeed, the atmosphere, for quite a long time, was only good energy.

3. Expansion Period

Growth phase. Unity enforced through repetition of key phrases. These principles can appear contradictory as a test of “true belief”.

Is it just me? The backlash, the fury, the disappointment following the initial loss feels overblown, overdone. England batted badly on the field, as history shows. What will this do to them?

4. The Backlash Phase

Problems arise because of mistakes. But the cult cannot admit errors. It starts to feed on anger towards critics.

In truth, a few days before the upcoming game, we have now reached an intriguing moment in the lifespan of this approach. England could quite easily win in the next Test with bold tactics. More likely, defeat could come swiftly. In case of defeat it seems we could be witnessing the death cult phase.

Before that happens, there are two things worth saying regarding this. More than two years ago, back in those heady early days, of passion and hope, I wrote an article suggesting Bazball was a cult. People were very angry, which proved the point because everyone knows how to confirm lack of cult status is if supporters react defensively denying scrutiny of the beliefs.

Recent events recently are equally notable. It seems that hating Bazball has turned into a movement. Online outrage is widespread, critical analysts, images of frustrated travelling fans missing out on play, similar to timeshare owners seeking justice.

Conversely, we have the wider backdrop of the opponent’s mixed more culturally hard-wired exasperation towards the unconventional visitors, claiming, your cherished traditions and have developed to distinguish yourselves culturally from us, well, it’s all a bit of a gag ultimately.

This is the core issue. All movements are similar. The style was a trend since the sport itself is insular. In fact, the team has long been exclusive, a circle, a garden party, a closed world with centuries of tradition and mystery defining it. It has long been a place where power and access are hoarded. It’s the British pastime of the British, the pioneering brand. And surprisingly, the country is a phenomenon, a system of unknown levels, a place that literally still has a king.

The players have been isolated in this system since childhood. Attempting to break free, to foster positivity, they are simply replicating their past, creating another a bubble, a closed circle, but now with a new team and a mentor promoting authenticity if you fit the mold.

Stay present. Run towards the danger. Despite efforts, you’re always basically in the same place.
